WHY MIDDLE SCHOOL COUNSELORS?

Middle school is an exciting yet challenging time for students, their parents, and their teachers. The middle school years are characterized by a need to explore a variety of interests, connecting their learning in the classroom to its practical application in life and work. Middle schoolers experience high levels of activity coupled with frequent fatigue due to rapid growth, a search for their own unique identity as they begin turning more frequently to peers rather than parents for ideas and affirmation, extreme sensitivity to the comments from others, and heavy reliance on friends to provide comfort, understanding and approval. Middle school counselors understand and respond to these challenges through a variety of services.

As a guidance counselor of East Hanover Middle School, my role is to help students, parents, and teachers develop positive learning experiences. It is my goal to assist in making this a productive year academically for our students. However, social and emotional problems can often interfere with a student's progress in his/her classes. The counseling program consists of a variety of services and activities to help students deal with personal, social, and educational concerns.

To assist in meeting the needs of students, confidential services are provided through both direct and indirect services:
  • Individual and small group counseling
  • Classroom guidance
  • Consultation with parents, teachers, and other educators
  • Informational meetings
  • Referrals to other school support services or community resources.

I encourage and appreciate parental participation and support as we all are working together to strive towards helping our youth become responsible and mature individuals. If you are concerned about your child, or if you would like to schedule an appointment, please call the school at (973) 887-8810.
